Academic: Bachelor's degree; Must also satisfy UW–Madison Graduate School minima (including the Graduate School GPA threshold when applicable). No separate department hard GPA cutoff published on the BME PhD admissions summary beyond Graduate School rules.
Prerequisites: Relevant academic background; Bachelor's in engineering (biomedical, chemical, electrical, industrial, mechanical, etc.) or science (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, immunology, physics, etc.).
IELTS: 7.0 overall; Graduate School minimum (UW-1241).
TOEFL: New scale: 5.0 overall | Old scale: 92 overall; Graduate School minimum (UW-1241) for tests taken on or after 21 Jan 2026.; Graduate School minimum (UW-1241) for tests taken before 21 Jan 2026. Students who submitted English scores for admission must take the SPEAK test in the first semester unless exempt.
GRE: Not considered; GRE not required.
