Academic: Bachelor's degree with GPA 3.0/4.0; UNC Graduate School minimum; programs may set additional standards.
Prerequisites: Coursework prerequisites; Minimum 3 semester hours in American Government and Politics (or equivalent; AP credit acceptable if shown on transcript). Required for enrollment, not for application.
IELTS: 7.0 overall; Recommended minimum for international applicants.
TOEFL: New scale: 5 overall | Old scale: 90 overall; Recommended minimum for tests taken on or after 26 January 2026.; Recommended minimum for tests taken before 26 January 2026.
GRE: Optional; Not required; encouraged for applicants with cumulative GPA below 3.3 or transcripts from non-accredited public/nonprofit institutions. GMAT or LSAT also accepted.
