Academic: Bachelor's degree with GPA 3.0/4.0; Or equivalent. Typical Rackham minimum scholastic average for graduate admission consideration; department reviews the full file.
Prerequisites: Relevant academic background; Preparation in materials science, engineering, or a closely related physical science or engineering field.
IELTS: 6.5 overall; Academic IELTS. Required if prior study does not meet an English proficiency exemption.
TOEFL: New scale: 4.5 overall | Old scale: 84 overall; Department FAQ minimum on the Internet-Based TOEFL is 84. New scale applies to tests from 21 Jan 2026; old scale applies before that date.
GRE: Optional; GRE scores are no longer required for the Ph.D. program application.
