Academic: Bachelor's degree with GPA 3.0/4.0; Equivalent to a US bachelor's degree. Rackham minimum; department describes admitted students as generally meeting about 3.5/4.0 undergraduate GPA (not treated here as a hard cutoff).
Prerequisites: Relevant academic background; Undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics. Research experience (lab or faculty project) is especially important for PhD applicants. Applicants who already hold an MS or PhD in ECE from another institution cannot apply for the same degree at Michigan.
IELTS: 6.5 overall; Academic IELTS. Required if prior study does not meet a Rackham English-proficiency exemption.
TOEFL: New scale: 4.5 overall | Old scale: 84 overall; Rackham/CoE minimum for admission consideration. New scale applies to tests from 21 Jan 2026; old scale applies before that date.
GRE: Not considered; GRE general test scores are no longer included in the admissions process for the PhD program.
