Academic: Bachelor's degree with GPA 3.0/4.0; Minimum overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and at least a 3.0 average in courses in pertinent or related fields; attention given to math-related courses and GPAs.
Prerequisites: Relevant academic background; Bachelor's in mathematics, a natural science, engineering, an applied science, or a social science with a strong mathematics background. Master's applicants are expected to be fluent in linear algebra and multivariate calculus; doctoral review emphasizes quantitative preparation.
IELTS: 6.5 overall (6.0 each component recommended); No subsection recommended below 6. Official IELTS reports mailed to the department.
TOEFL: New scale: 5.0 overall | Old scale: 90 overall; Doctoral applicants on the new TOEFL iBT scale (aligned with Stony Brook doctoral AMS/Data Science records); confirm current Graduate School mapping for this cycle.; Doctoral applicants; required if not a native or primary English speaker. Degree from an English-instruction college/university may waive TOEFL/IELTS.
GRE: Optional; For Spring 2026/Fall 2026 applications, GRE General is NOT required; scores may be submitted (ETS institutional code 2548, department 0702). Confirm for Fall 2027 if policy is republished.
