Academic: Bachelor's degree with junior/senior GPA 2.50/4.0; In physics and mathematics (4.00 scale); best-qualified applicants accepted up to available spaces. Exceptions possible for special backgrounds or applicants who already hold a master's.
Prerequisites: Relevant academic background; Bachelor's in physics or an allied field. Degree need not be from a physics department; core preparation in areas such as classical mechanics, E&M, quantum, and statistical physics is expected or can be acquired through coursework.
IELTS: 6.5 overall; Department FAQ / Graduate School minimum composite.
TOEFL: New scale: 4.5 overall (Speaking 3.5) | Old scale: 80 overall (Speaking 19 preferred); Fox Graduate School GCAC-305 new-scale floor for tests from 21 Jan 2026 (as used elsewhere in Penn State school file).; Department FAQ minimum iBT 80, preferably Speaking 19.
